An interactive installation mixing augmented reality and music, shown in late August 2011 at Galeria Bezdomna in the old military warehouses on Węglowa Street in Białystok.

Galeria Bezdomna (“the Homeless Gallery”) is an open exhibition format started by photographers Tomek Sikora and Andrzej Świetlik: it takes over an empty building for a few days and anyone can show work there, with no selection and no set theme. The 2011 edition was the third in Białystok and the second at Węglowa. Work was brought in from Friday, 26 August, and the opening was on Saturday.

How it worked

In front of a screen showing the camera feed lay a few paper cards with markers. By holding them up to the camera, visitors picked which tracks – pre-recorded voices – should play, and built their own piece out of them. 3D objects appeared on screen where the markers were.

Underneath sat a looper: 12 files, 8 seconds each, which had to start at exactly the same moment and were switched on and off with volume (zero meant silence). Incredibox worked along similar lines. I built it in Flash Builder. The hardest part was sync – tracks played together kept drifting apart. On 6 August 2011, three weeks before the show, I asked about it on Stack Overflow.

Video

A short piece by Gazeta Wyborcza Białystok, published on 27 August 2011, shows the installation in use (in Polish).
