Drone view of the front wall of the children’s hospital in Białystok with a mural: a bear doctor with a stethoscope, a hippo, a crocodile on crutches, a bee and a fox in a wheelchair

For almost forty years the front wall of the University Children’s Clinical Hospital (UDSK) in Białystok was decorated with a painted sun. In May 2022 it was replaced by a mural of a bear doctor surrounded by animal patients: a hippo on a drip, a crocodile on crutches, a bee with a patched eye and a fox in a wheelchair.

The idea came from the Up To Date Festival team, who approached the hospital in the winter of 2021. The illustrations are by Małgorzata Detner, made together with a child psychologist; children were involved in the project too, and Good Looking Studio painted the wall. The mural was unveiled on 5 May 2022.

The day before, on 4 May, I photographed it from the drone in the late-afternoon sun. The picture ran with Radio Akadera’s report on the unveiling and was also used by Polsat News.

In July 2026, while documenting the “Kiś ogórki, nie emocje” mural, I caught the bear again – this time from further away, with the whole hospital complex in the frame.
