“Send a postcard to Grandma” is an Up To Date Festival initiative: at the festival you can send a postcard to someone you love, free of charge. In June 2019, for the festival’s tenth edition, the campaign got its own mural – the face of 90-year-old Eugenia Bajguz on the wall of the former University of Białystok rectorate at 14 Skłodowskiej-Curie Street. The portrait was photographed by Gosia Żuk, the mural was designed by Jan Estrada-Osmycki with the festival team and painted by Good Looking Studio. Cezary Chwicewski came up with the campaign and led it creatively.

My part was the photo documentation of the mural and the drone footage for “Niespodzianka” (“Surprise”), a short film in which Grandma Eugenia sees her portrait on the wall for the first time.

KTR awards

The project was entered in the 2020 edition of the KTR competition run by Poland’s Advertising Creators Club:

  • Bronze for the “Wyślij Pocztówkę do Babci” campaign in Integrated Campaigns / Long Term Communication. Credited: “Photo documentation – mural / Drone footage – film ‘Niespodzianka’: Maciej Korsan Studio”.
  • Nomination for the mural in Branded Content & Entertainment / Still Image (entered by Good Looking Studio). Credited: “Photographs: Maciej Korsan”.

The mural’s return in 2023

When the building was insulated and refurbished, the mural disappeared for a few years. The building’s owner, the Marshal’s Office of the Podlaskie Voivodeship, invited the Up To Date team to recreate it. Grandma Eugenia was back on the wall on 31 July 2023, with a reworded slogan: “Wyślij pocztówkę dla Babci… i Dziadka” (“Send a postcard for Grandma… and Grandpa”). “Dla” instead of “do” is how people speak in Podlasie – locals online had asked for it, and so had Mrs Eugenia’s grandson, Andrzej Bajguz. The new version was designed by Wojtek Słabuszewski and Cezary Chwicewski. I photographed the mural from the drone again, and the festival published the pictures.
